An engine builders plea for better understanding of engine performance

Dear Sir,

I've just been able to read your very interesting article about the performance in marine engines. As we are dealing with this subject, we can confirm the situation you are describing. The most difficult from my point of view is that, at ship yards in particular, pleasure craft business is more and more difficult to find someone to discuss the matter on an open and frank way. The demand for speed seems to be so high, that only consideration in the higher end counts.

My question, where has this article been published, all ship yards and naval architects involved in this business should, no must, read it.

Thank you !

mit freundlichen Grüßen / with best regards

This article  - Special Performance Considerations for Boats with Electronic Control Engines - was prepared for the 2001 International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX). Here is a quote from the abstract:

An engine is more than just its rated power and RPM. Every engine model exhibits unique performance characteristics which can greatly affect the overall performance of a vessel. Understanding this and properly evaluating the nature of the hull-propulsor-engine equilibrium is critical to a successful installation.

Recent trends in the performance characteristics of contemporary engines have made it necessary to take a bit more care in their selection. Electronic control (EC) engines have pushed these performance trends even further. This paper will offer technical guidance to determine situations - during acceleration or towing, for example -. that that should be reviewed with greater scrutiny if an EC engine is to be considered.
