Technical Presentation Notice
[October 2007]
HydroComp Technical Director to
present at IBEX
"Hull Form Hydrodynamics: A
Practical Primer" will be presented at IBEX on October 11,
2007 from 3:30-5:00pm. Naval architects typically design hulls
from the "inside out" to meet particular hydrostatic
requirements. For this purpose, a hull's geometry is shaped to
conform to the specific volume and centroid required by the
internal weight of the boat and its cargo, or by the volume needed
for tanks or mechanical spaces. For any given volume and center,
however, we can design an unlimited number of different
geometries. So, what are the implications of shape from the
hydrodynamic perspective? The hydrodynamic requirements of hull
form design may be best served by working from the "outside
in". In other words, sometimes you have to "think like
the water". Anyone that designs, builds or operates marine
vessels will find this primer on hull form hydrodynamics both
interesting and useful. This presentation is not intended to be a
deep academic treatment of the subject. Rather, its purpose is to
provide participants with a practical understanding of a variety
of fundamental concepts about the relationship between hull shape
and how the water reacts to that shape, as well as to dispel a
number of common myths.

[June 2007]
HydroComp staff presented paper
to SNAME New England Section
"Estimation of Entrained Water
Added Mass Properties for Vibration Analysis" was the title
of a paper delivered to the New England Section of SNAME on June
21, 2007. The objective of the paper iswas to provide a summary
survey of calculation methods that are available to estimate the
wetted added mass properties of a propeller for vibration
analysis. Ranging from simple parametric formula to more detailed
radius-chord integration, the paper presents and validates
calculations for axial added mass of entrained water and torsional
added mass moment of inertia of entrained water. The paper can be
downloaded from the Knowledge
Library.
