Training
seminars: the handshake connection
Miscellaneous Musings from the Technical Director
Wednesday, 18-June-2007 by
Donald MacPherson - Technical Director
I had a really great time last week with eight
propulsion professionals at a special one-day PropExpert seminar that
we held right here in Durham. The discussion was active and the topics
extended beyond just the use of PropExpert. (This is typical for our
seminars, where some of the tangent discussions can be very lively and
constructive.) Also last week, I received an email about participating
in an industry online training program. It got me to thinking,
which can be a dangerous thing...

Upcoming
technical papers and presentations
Miscellaneous Musings from the Technical Director
Monday, 28-MAY-2007 by
Donald MacPherson - Technical Director
Writing technical papers is one of the
things that I find really enjoyable about this job. The writing is
fun, but it is probably more the discovery of new information that is
the best part - in particular, the process of describing a new trend
or physical characteristic in numerical terms. For example, past
technical papers have presented new prediction formula that we have
developed for the effect of cupping or cavitation breakdown. Our
latest effort is...

Bienvenido
a SINAVAL y Bilbao
Thursday, 01-FEB-2007 by
Stephanie McArdle - EU Marketing and Sales Manager
The SINAVAL/Euro Fish Expo, hosted by
Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque region, is a show worth
visiting for those interested in strengthening their position in the
Spanish marine market. The exhibitors were predominately shipyards/boatbuilders,
power equipment manufacturers and various Spanish Maritime
Associations. Although the trade show was the smallest marine trade
show I have ever attended featuring just six rows of exhibitors, it
managed to attract a concentrated roster of exhibitors including...

What
Happens In Vegas...
Thusday, 30-NOV-2006 by
Matthew Packard - Project Engineer
Hopefully won't just stay in Vegas. That is if
you are talking about the National Marine Propeller Association's
annual convention that was held at the Orleans Hotel on November
10th through the 12th. This year brought many companies together to
promote their businesses and exchange tips on marine propeller repair
and manufacturing...

METS
2006 Wrap-up
Miscellaneous Musings from the Technical Director
Monday, 20-NOV-2006 by
Donald MacPherson - HydroComp Technical Director
I'm writing this on the 7+ hour flight back to
the US from METS 2006 in Amsterdam. (Why are all of the marine
trade shows compressed into a few weeks in the autumn? At least it
seems that way...) The weather in Amsterdam was pretty mediocre this
trip (is the weather in Amsterdam really ever sunny?), the pizza is
not like we find at home (only so-so, for me), but the steak was great
and the accompanying bottle of Argentine Malbec wine was first rate. A
hint to attendees of conventions at the RAI Convention Centre...

Thoughts
from IBEX
Miscellaneous Musings from the Technical Director
Monday, 06-NOV-2006 by
Donald MacPherson - HydroComp Technical Director
This is the first of my two November musings, and
I'll share with you some thoughts about last week's IBEX show in
Miami. The second musing will probably be all about the upcoming METS
show in Amsterdam next week. You gotta love the October and November
trade show travel in the marine business...

SNAME
Propeller Symposium
Miscellaneous Musings from the Technical Director
Monday, 18-SEP-2006 by
Donald MacPherson - Technical Director
Well, I'm back from another trip to the
tri-annual SNAME Propeller Symposium. This gathering of
propeller professionals is always a good time to see HydroComp's
customers, old school mates, and past professors and mentors. I even
was able to spend time with a past HydroComp "alumni"...
